In Red Lake, hunting is a huge part of the community that a lot of people rely on. One moose can feed an entire family for a very long time. In a world where food is over-processed, over-consumed and wasted, I think being able to source your own food from the earth is a tradition that is very important.
In today's world, we are very removed from the animals that provide us sustenance. Ordering a burger from a fast food restaurant, one rarely thinks about the life that was used to create that meal. Traditions of hunting, gathering and growing one's own food forces a better understanding of our connection to the earth, and the life that inhabits it. I think this connection is important to remember, and that when using an animal for food, no part should be wasted.
For this piece, I used a moose skull as my canvas. I wanted to take a part of the animal that is sometimes discarded, and give it new life and meaning.
